Fully qualified and experienced Secondary and GCSE English Language and English Literature teacher of 20 years and GCSE English examiner, offering small group tuition, based in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire.

Joanna Walker

About me:

I have over 20 years' experience as a Secondary English teacher and have worked in 7 schools across Blackpool and the Fylde coast, teaching a full range of ages and abilities. I am also an examiner of GCSE English Language and I have an enhanced DBS certificate. I have been offering private tuition since I launched my business in September 2024 and have supported numerous young people to develop their skills and build their confidence in English.

Background:

I achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Drama from Lancaster University in 2005. I then completed a PGCE in Secondary English in 2006 at Edge Hill University where I achieved Qualified Teacher Status.

Hobbies:

I love reading and attending live theatre and music concerts. I also enjoy sewing and am learning Spanish as my dream is to live in the Canary Islands one day.


Group Masterclasses

All masterclasses are delivered in person from my home learning studio, situated in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire.

Secondary Ready

Suitable for Year 6 students, this class will help prepare you for the English SATs assessments (Reading and GPS) and will also develop your writing skills. The class is designed to embed the key knowledge and skills needed for English at Secondary school.

Starting September 2026

Mondays/Wednesdays 4.15-5pm

GCSE Groundwork

Suitable for Year 9 and 10 students, this class will help to prepare you for the demands of GCSE English Language and Literature by focusing on key skills and subject knowledge.

GCSE English Language

These classes are geared towards Year 11 students and will cover key subject knowledge, skills and exam technique, tailored to the exam specification which you are studying.

Starting September 2026

Thursdays 5-6pm/6-7pm (dependent on exam board)

GCSE English Literature

Aimed at Year 10 and 11 students, these masterclasses will cover the key knowledge of your studied GCSE Literature texts, as well as developing your academic writing and critical analysis. Suitable for all exam boards, but most beneficial if you have already been introduced to the texts in class/are currently studying.
